History

In May of 2008, Trips for Kids – Triangle (TFKT) began working on a project to increase the availability of cycling facilities in Downtown Durham.   This initial project concept consisted of a pump track to be built in a city park.  After comparing notes, TORC and TFKT realized that a project of slightly larger scope and situated near the American Tobacco Trail would fit nicely into the IMBA Gateway Trails concept.

Durham Parks and Recreation was receptive of the general concept and Solite Park was chosen as the best candidate for the project.  It was decided that TORC would lead the construction of a short section of beginner single track and TFKT would head up the construction a Pump Track.

Working cooperatively TORC and TFKT applied for separate REI Grants to fund their respective portions of the project.  Both grant proposal were approved by REI, giving the TORC/TFKT team funding to proceed with selecting a professional trail builder to construct both the Single Track and Pump Track.

Solite is the Triangle Regions first Pocket Bike Park.  The bike park is being constucted in stages.  Stage 1 consists of the Pump Track and one mile of beginner Single Track.  Phase 2 will expand the Pump Track, add a skills area and hopefully a Dirt Jump Line.

The project is near completion, grand opening ceremonies will be on June 10, 2010..

If you have any desire to become involved in this project or to help create new Gateway Trails in the Triangle, please contact us.
